Overview

I led the design of a suite of prototypes designed to revolutionise the gig economy tax ecosystem. This was a Capgemini AIE (Applied Innovation Exchange) project intended to be provocative and spark conversations within HMRC.

These prototypes included a tax software (example: Sage Accounting) marketplace (embedded via SDK integration into the gig platform (example: Deliveroo) app or website. This meant taxpayers could use an HMRC tool to sign up to tax software through their platform app, giving HMRC an overview of the whole landscape.

User Needs

"As a gig economy worker, I need a quick and easy way to pay my taxes".

Action

I built a Figma prototype for the marketplace in collaboration with Sage, Deliveroo, Bubble and HMRC, speaking to each stakeholder group weekly and iterating based on their feedback. I also created dashboards for all users groups for them to keep track of tax data made possible by this new interconnected marketplace.

A huge part of this brief was to create a final presentation that blew everyone away, so I created beautiful visuals to convey the value of the product, as well as using green screen to record footage like the newsreader clip, which introduced each POC. Everything from the animations, logos, presentation assets and background, even the event stickers, needed designing. The real UX of this project was the Experience of the final presentation.

Challenges

At first, the client (HMRC) was sceptical about the innovation and ideation process, and the value it might bring them. They also didn't have much time to offer us so communicating value efficiently was extremely important. We created and offered slick and value centred visuals, for example, video tours of the dashboards, bento boxes detailing the benefits for stakeholder groups. The client began to understand how the product could positively affect all stakeholder groups involved, and became an enthusiastic advocate for our approach.

Result

This project was one of several concepts presented at the HMRC Innovation Festival 2024 as a live broadcast to 500+ attendees. I was responsible not just for the ultra-high fidelity prototypes but also the visuals and animations needed to showcase the products. This meant I picked up skills in animation using Figma, Jitter and After Effects, some of which can be found below. The client said we provided 3x the value of the previous year and asked us to begin planning for the following year.
